Parkour, a fast-paced activity which originated in France, is now gaining popularity in Bellingham. Bellingham resident Rafe Kelley teaches free, hour-long parkour classes once a week. The classes meet at noon every Saturday outside the Wade King Student Recreation. Kelley teaches some of the basic jumps and wall scaling techniques needed for parkour. After the class ends, the action gets more extreme. A “jam session” begins when the traceurs take off running toward the cluster of campus buildings near the center of Western’s campus. The racers make their way through practicing their techniques. These athletes see everyday objects such as walls, which others might pass by, as opportunities to strengthen their skills. Jams sessions lasts as long as the traceurs have energy.
