We are not representing the other side of this issue. We are Western students who understand abortion as a healthcare need that saves women's lives, and we are not interested in arguing with the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP) or restricting anyone's right to free speech.
Instead, we hope to offer support to people adversely affected by the images in Red Square and to join in solidarity with other pro-choice women and men. Selling “This is What Pro-Choice America Looks Like” T-shirts is our way of giving Western students an opportunity to take a stand while walking past the display without engaging.
Our main concern was that campus remained peaceful this week. In the past, upset students have vandalized the display. It is important that we avoid confrontation and find more positive outlets for our energy. Solidarity shirts were available for $3 on Vendors Row during the GAP visit and any proceeds went to support family planning. We can ignore the GAP without ignoring the issues.
