Heartbreak shown through protest PDF Print E-mail

I want to thank all the participants in the recent guerilla theater protest held in Red Square last week and for the insightful panel discussion that followed.  These courageous students and community members “occupied” Western for three days to bring awareness to the U.S. involvement in Iraq.

The protest was difficult for me to watch — my husband served in Iraq in 2003-2004 and his involvement has shaped our lives indefinitely.  In no way did I feel these activists were against military members or their families.

Instead, they portrayed the atrocities and heartbreak that military is involved with.   As I watched, I felt overcome with emotion not only for my own family's hard path of healing but for all the other countless people — American and Iraqi — hurting right now.  The activists surrounded me with support and comfort.

In the five years my husband and our families have spent trying to heal, I can sincerely say that community support is by far the most affective.  So again, I say thank you to these men and women for sharing the stories with Western's community.  With such support and awareness, I feel confident we can overcome.
