A nationwide search came to a close this morning as the search committee for the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS)  chose Brent Carbajal to fill the position.  Carbajal, who starts as dean on March 16, has been serving as interim dean of CHSS since July 1, 2008, and was one of three finalists for the permanent position of dean of CHSS.

“Like President Obama, and President Shepard, Brent Carbajal is the man of our time,” said Dennis Murphy, Western's provost and vice president for academic affairs.

The search began fall quarter of 2008, and since that time Murphy said he has received e-mails from faculty and staff praising Carbajal for the job he has done as interim dean.

“There was one underlining message that was apparent in the e-mails,” Murphy said.  “That message was we trust [Carbajal].”

Murphy said Carbajal has strong integrity and, as interim dean, has been understanding to the needs of faculty and staff who work within CHSS.

Carbajal said he appreciates all the support he received during the hiring process and is excited to start the permanent position.

“I am extremely humbled by all this,” Carbajal said.  “I can’t tell you how excited I am to start the permanent position.”
