Two armed robbery suspects remain at large after fleeing campus police Thursday.

The armed males approached a Western student in the Sehome Arboretum and forced him to surrender his backpack and iPod at approximately 4:47 p.m., according to University Police.

The victim was reportedly walking through the arboretum on his way to campus when two masked men brandishing a knife and a handgun approached him, according to a campus-wide e-mail sent by University Police Chief Randy Stegmeier.

After the confrontation, the suspects reportedly fled into the arboretum.

UP and Bellingham Police were notified and performed an area search, but the suspect was not found, according to the e-mail.

Bellingham Police Sgt. Dennis James said the suspects were described as white males in their 20s wearing hooded sweatshirts.

James said Bellingham Police are currently conducting an investigation, but would not disclose more information.

Police urge students, faculty and staff to stay out of the arboretum until further notice, according to the e-mail.
