Western’s women’s soccer team logged their 4th straight shutout Saturday, defeating Montana State University Billings 3-0 at Whatcom Community College’s Orca Field.
The victory pushed the Vikings’ conference record to 7-1-1, 10-4-2 overall. MSUB dropped to 4-4-0 conference, 8-7-1 overall.
Western senior goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent set up shop in the goalbox once again, shutting down the Yellowjackets’ offense with 5 saves. She has a season total of 8 shutouts, tying her previous season record.
The Vikings’ offense wasted no time in getting the ball rolling. Western senior midfielder Kelly Irving scored in the 9th minute from a free kick at the 24 yard line.
It would be over a half hour until the next goal, as Western senior forward Lucy Miller played a low cross to connect with sophomore forward Justina MacDowell, who extended at the last second for a sliding finish to further the Vikings’ lead at 2-0.
Only two minutes later, Western’s offense led a passing charge upfield that culminated in a shot from eight yards out by freshman forward Joana Houplin, sealing the game at 3-0.
The win pushed the Vikings into a one-point conference lead over No. 4 nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific University, whom Western will play Wednesday Oct. 28 in Seattle
