At about 11 p.m. on Nov. 19, a power pole fell on the University Hills apartments at 808 21st St., just off Bill McDonald Parkway. Police cruisers and a fire engine were positioned to keep traffic from driving on 21st Street in front of the apartment complex while police waited for the power company to come and deal with the pole, according to a Bellingham Police Department officer on the scene. At 11:55 p.m., police let off a siren and asked over a patrol car intercom that tenants of the building evacuate. Until then, Western junior Rebecca Anderson was sitting in her University Hills anxiously watching the sparks from the power lines outside. “I didn’t hear anything,” Anderson said. “I saw a cop car go by a couple times, then I looked outside and saw the pole. I was pretty okay until I saw the sparks, and they made me a little uneasy.” Andrew Zachary, 20, watched the scene unfold outdoors. “Those sparks are heading straight for my bedroom,” Zachary said. “I figured I’d see if I could spend the night with some friends across the street.” There were no reported injuries at the time of the incident.
