With more than 200 clubs active at Western, the shear amount of work required to coordinate a successful club can be overwhelming. The Associated Students Board of Directors approved the job description for a new club coordinator position on March 3. Funding for this position has not been approved but will be finalized spring quarter, AS President Matt Jarrell said. The AS club coordinator will serve as an information resource for clubs within the AS. “The AS club system is huge on campus—with over 200 active and involved clubs,” AS Vice President of Activities Colin Watrin said. “It’s hard to manage all that.” Watrin said he proposed the new coordinator position after consulting several different advisers who were beginning to feel overburdened by pressures of the club system. The group collaboratively decided the coordinator would help alleviate some of the pressure by working directly with AS clubs and the Activities Center staff, balancing the workload of the vice president of activities. The coordinator position is meant to focus on the smaller, day-to-day tasks. “They are meant to update the club Web site, meet clubs during office hours, keep track of club information and help with programming,” Watrin said. Some other responsibilities for the new position include helping organize events, attending management meetings and keeping activity archives up-to-date for each club. With smaller tasks passed down to the new coordinator, the vice president of activities can focus their time on the bigger picture. He said the AS would largely benefit from the additional position by spreading out all necessary duties, helping to run the numerous clubs more smoothly. “It will help increase the relationship between clubs and the AS,” said Virgilio Cintron, AS vice president of Business and Operations. “Having someone help with club structure can help develop these clubs and get more people involved."
