Western is 12th out of 20 on the Environmental Protection Agency’s list of green energy purchasers in the nation, and the only college or university in Washington on the list.

Five years ago, Western became the first university in the country to apply a student fee that would support the purchase of green energy for use on campus.

Western students voted 80 percent in favor to renew the Green Energy Fee in spring 2010.

Western purchases 100 percent of its electrical energy from Endeavor Wind Farm in Iowa by using renewable energy credits.

Green power refers to electricity products that use environmentally friendly resources, such as solar and wind power.

The EPA wants to increase the use of green power to help reduce electricity use that harms the environment.
