Turning trashy clunkers into classy cruisers

When Nolan Leh isn’t spending his time studying at Western, he is fixing up old bicycles.

Leh, a Western senior, refurbishes road bikes and classic cruisers. He said he is currently working on building a motorized version of a classical cruiser.

“I took it out on Lummi Island and it needs a few adjustments,” Leh said.

He wasn’t getting the screws quite right and they kept coming loose, he said.

Leh got into remodeling old bicycles gradually.

He said it took a lot of tinkering to get the hang of it, but now Leh has remodeled 100 bikes in the past two years.

Leh said his mom is a garage sale addict and finds bikes in bad shape for about $15.

Many of the bikes come from older people who have not taken care of them, and he usually has to fix the brakes, Leh said.

Leh also goes dumpster diving searching for bikes.

“It’s good for parts,” he said.

Most of Leh’s customers are friends and friends of friends.

He said he is trying to expand his clientele by making business cards to advertise doing small repairs such as taping handle bars.

Leh said he left business cards on 50 bikes.  He did not get the response he hoped for.

“I’ll go around campus and see seats falling off,” Leh said.  “It scares me sometimes.”

Katy Swift saw one of Leh’s bikes advertised on Craigslist and bought it about a month ago.

Swift said she bought from Leh because the price was reasonable.

When she picked up the bike, she saw that the craftsmanship was great too. She could clearly see his passion for bikes, she said.

“He put in some serious elbow grease,” Swift said.

Even though her bicycle was made in the 1980s, but it does exactly what she needs it to do, Swift said.

Swift uses her bicycle to get around campus, downtown and ride on trails.

“I love it,” Swift said. “It’s good to have a bike to bang around in.”

Leh tends to sell more bikes in the fall and spring.

It depends on how many remodels he gets finished, he said.

“I try to get two done a month,” Leh said.
