Coming off a loss to the leader of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Western’s women’s basketball team beat the University of Alaska Fairbanks 91-62 on Saturday, Feb. 11.
The Vikings remain in second place in the GNAC, with a conference record of 10-4.
Vikings senior guard Kristin Schramm had a game-high 16 points.
After the first five scores of the game, where the Nanooks led three times and tied the score twice, the Vikings took the lead and never looked back.
In the first half, Western led by as many as 21 points. All of Schramm’s points came in the first half of the game.
With a layup by Schramm at the buzzer, the score during halftime was 50-29, Vikings.
During the second half, the Vikings never slowed down. Alaska Fairbanks never led in the second half, and the Vikings were up by as many as 33 points.
Other high scorers for the Vikings include freshman center Kayla Bernsen, who came off the bench and contributed 15 points to the Vikings’ win, junior guard Corinn Waltrip, who scored 13 points, and junior center Britt Harris scored 12.
This was the second highest final score for the Vikings during regular season play. Their highest score came from their win against Alaska Fairbanks earlier in the season, with a final score of 93-80.
The Vikings return home to play a GNAC opponent, Northwest Nazarene, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Northwest Nazarene is 8-6 in conference play, and the last time the Vikings faced the Crusaders Western lost 75-62.
